The Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks square it off for the second time in three days on Sunday at Madison Square Garden. The Nets absorbed their fifth loss in seven games after dropping a close loss to their intra-state rival, New York Knicks, 124-122, on Friday. Cam Thomas poured in 43 points on 16-for-22 shooting and Cameron Johnson added 17 markers. Dennis Schroder’s late three-pointer gave the Nets a 122-121 lead with 12 seconds left, but Jalen Brunson responded with a cold-blooded three-point jumper to put the Knicks ahead, 124-122. Schroder’s layup attempts to send the game to overtime was swatted away by his former teammate Mikal Bridges. Brunson, who made the game-winning trey, finished with a game-high 37 points while Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby added 22 and 25 points, respectively. Playing without star big man Karl Anthony Towns, the Knicks blew an 18-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter but somehow dodged a disaster thanks to Brunson’s late-game heroics.

The Nets are still my pick to cover the spread on Sunday. The Knicks may be 7-3 in their last 10 meetings with the Nets, but Brooklyn beat the spread in their last two meetings. With Towns still questionable to play on Sunday, the Nets will continue to take advantage of the gaping hole in the middle of the Knicks’ defense. Thomas had another explosive game against the Knicks and I expect him to be a factor offensively in Sunday’s ball game at MSG.
