As matchday 16 out of 19 kicks off in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, only Argentina has officially booked its ticket to next year’s World Cup. Ecuador in second place and Paraguay in third are close behind the Albiceleste, while Brazil sits fourth with just a four-point cushion over seventh-place Venezuela, who would face a playoff.
Brazil needs to step up its game—they’ve managed only one win in their last five matches, a 2-1 victory over Colombia. After a heavy 4-1 loss in Argentina at the end of March and a pointless 0-0 draw in Ecuador on June 6, the Seleção must find their winning form again against Paraguay. That match marked Carlo Ancelotti’s debut as Brazil’s head coach in Guayaquil. While the Italian seemed somewhat satisfied with the draw, he’s demanding a win in his first home game in front of 49,000 fans at the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo. Brazil has taken 10 points from their last four home games, including wins over Ecuador (1-0), Peru (4-0), a draw with Uruguay (1-1), and the recent win against Colombia (2-1).
Paraguay risks dropping further behind Brazil in this 16th round as they continue to chase their first away win in these qualifiers. Their away record is disappointing, with five draws and two losses in seven road games, scoring only four goals. Currently third in the standings and unbeaten since July 3, Paraguay has earned eight points in their last four qualifiers: draws in Bolivia (2-2) and Colombia (2-2), and wins against Chile (1-0) and Uruguay (2-0). However, their upcoming trip to Brazil looks like a tough challenge, and they may be focusing their efforts on hosting Ecuador in the next round.

Our Brazil vs Paraguay Prediction
Brazil has never lost at home to Paraguay in World Cup qualifying. Their last meeting at Mineirão saw the Seleção dominate with a 4-0 win in February 2022, thanks to goals from Raphinha, Coutinho, Antony, and Rodrygo. For his second match in charge, following a 0-0 draw in Ecuador, former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that anything less than a win in São Paulo won’t do, especially against a Paraguay side that is one of just four teams yet to win an away game in this qualifying campaign.
