The Boston Red Sox (39-35 SU, 34-40 ATS) look to complete the sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays (35-38 SU, 34-39 ATS), who are trying to salvage a split on this six-game homestand. Toronto managed to win two out of three against Cleveland, but the Blue Jays’ offense hasn’t had much success hitting Boston pitching. Toronto dominated this series down the stretch last year, but this year’s Boston team appears much more able to compete with the AL East’s best.
There’s more bad news for the Blue Jays: Kevin Gausman has apparently forgotten to check his pitches through customs at the international border. Gausman has pitched fantastically on the road, going 4-2 with a 1.86 ERA away from Toronto. In the Rogers Centre, however, Gausman is 1-3 with a 6.44 ERA. The problem hasn’t been missing bats, as Gausman’s strikeout numbers are similar both home and away. But when he’s at home, pitching to contact hasn’t worked.

The Red Sox seem to have grown in confidence against one of their toughest stretches of the schedule, as they’ve won consecutive series against the Yankees and the Phillies before winning two straight over Toronto. They’ll likely need offense, because Brayan Bello hasn’t exactly done the job of run prevention.
In Bello’s past three starts, the Red Sox are 0-3 and have given up at least six runs every time. Bello’s ERA hasn’t been much better at home than on the road, as he’s been mediocre no matter where he’s pitched. Given how he’s pitched and how Gausman can’t get people out at home, there’s no reason this total should be as low as it is. This total should be more than manageable with Boston’s surging offense.
