The Boston Red Sox (58-51 SU, 50-59 ATS) conclude their series with the Texas Rangers (53-58 SU, 49-62 ATS), with the teams having split their first two meetings. The Rangers looked like they were about to make a run in the AL West, but the post-All Star break surge appears to be a southwestern mirage, caused by four games against the Chicago White Sox.
Since the White Sox and their 19-game losing streak left Texas, the Rangers have gone just 2-6 and have lost the middle and finale of each of their past three series. The Rangers are still alive in the division thanks to the Mariners and Astros being unable to put the division away, but it’s becoming clear that the only way Texas is getting in is via the division.

Boston had been surging itself before the All-Star break, but the break seems to have sapped the Red Sox’s momentum. The Red Sox are just 5-8 since the break, although they did take two of three from Seattle to get things back in the right direction.
The biggest question for Boston is whether the Sox can slug their way to a victory. Nick Pivetta has not pitched well as of late, as he’s either been strikeout or danger. He’s fanned 10 hitters in three of his past five starts, but he also gave up a combined 15 earned runs in three of those starts. And that says nothing of the Boston defense, which leads the majors in unearned runs. Given the Red Sox’s tendency to mash the ball against Texas, this total seems quite low. Boston tends to pound the ball regardless, but it has especially hit well against the Rangers. Our prediction for Boston vs. Texas is Over 8.5 Runs.
