The Boston Red Sox (57-50 SU, 49-58 ATS) visit the Texas Rangers (52-57 SU, 48-61 ATS) in what amounts to an elimination series for the home team. The Rangers seemingly got back in the race for the wild card a week ago by going on a five-game surge, but four of those wins came against the hapless White Sox. Since Chicago came off the schedule, the Rangers are just 1-5 and have been getting hit hard.
Given what Boston usually does at the plate, that’s about the last place that Texas needs to be. The Red Sox are just on the outside of the wild card race, and that’s because the defense simply can’t make plays. The Red Sox did finally get a series win last time out against Seattle, but they’ve tended to rely far too heavily on outslugging opponents. That might not work long-term, but it will probably work in this series.

Kutter Crawford hasn’t been good since the All-Star Game, getting lit up in both of his past two appearances. To be fair, he had to face the Dodgers and the Yankees back-to-back, so it’s a little early to write him off completely. But the fact is that he isn’t getting enough outs right now, and he’s facing a lineup that knows it needs to bail out its pitchers.
The Rangers look likely to go with a bullpen game to stop the bleeding. Given how Texas’ bullpen has performed this season, that seems more likely to open up another wound. The Rangers’ 4.46 ERA from the bullpen ranks 13th in the American League, ahead of only Chicago and Toronto. Boston’s run production dipped slightly against Seattle, but the Mariners pitch a lot better than the Rangers do. Our prediction for Boston vs. Texas is Over 9.5 Runs.
