The Boston Red Sox (75-75 SU, 70-80 ATS) visit the Tampa Bay Rays (73-77 SU, 76-74 ATS) to start a mid-week series. The Red Sox appeared like they were going to be a playoff contender, but they’ve come apart down the stretch and have virtually no hope at making the postseason now. Boston finds itself 2.5 games back of Detroit, which remains outside the playoff picture, and four games behind Minnesota, which holds the final AL playoff spot.
Tampa Bay also has no hope at the playoffs, and the Rays have to worry about getting caught by the Blue Jays for fourth place. The Rays are just one game ahead of the AL East’s worst team, which speaks to just how strong this division has been. The one thing that Boston has going for it lately is that it has cleaned up the defensive mistakes. If the Red Sox had done a better job with that earlier in the season, they might still be in the race for the playoffs. In Nick Pivetta’s past seven starts, none of the runs he’s given up have been unearned.
And with a competent defense behind him, Pivetta has pitched well. He’s allowed three runs or less in six of those starts, and only once did he fail to get through the fifth inning. His counterpart, Shane Baz, has also been fairly effective, although Baz has been a little less effective at home. His ERA is a full run higher at Tropicana Field than it has been on the road. With Pivetta the more consistent pitcher and the Boston defense playing much better, our prediction for Boston vs. Tampa Bay is for the Red Sox to win.
