In Game 1 of the wild-card series between Boston and the Yankees, which had everyone on the edge of their seats, the Red Sox took Game 1 with a Hall of Famer-worthy start from Crochet, who retired 17 consecutive Yankees. From the batter's box, he was helped at just the right moment by Yoshida, with an RBI single that turned the score around, and in the ninth inning, Bregman, with a double that brought in Story, drove in Boston's third run, closing out the key Game 1 in favor of the Sox 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees put up a fight; in fact, they were -135 favorites in the betting to win it, and Max Fried had another diligent outing. He pitched a quality outing, pitching 6.1 innings, striking out 6, but then Weaver, with little control, came in to relieve him in the inning in which Yoshida turned the game around for the visitors.
