Garrett Crochet got Boston’s season off to a nice start in Game One of the series on Thursday with six shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Cincinnati went with reliever Pierce Johnson to start the day and pulled him one out into the game after giving up two hits and a run.
Boston is going with Sonny Gray to start the day on the mound. Gray went 14-8 in 32 starts for the Cardinals last season with a 4.28 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. Reds hitters have enjoyed some success against him in the past, hitting .278 (25-90) with five home runs.
Cincinnati is going with Brady Singer to start. Singer pitched in 32 games for the Reds last season, his first with the club, going 14-12 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. In 71 at-bats against him, Red Sox hitters hit .296, with 21 hits but no home runs.

It is not uncommon for hitters to need a little time to find their rhythm once the season gets underway. Cincinnati certainly didn’t have any yesterday, and it is doubtful they will find it today against Gray. At the same time, Singer is a solid pitcher as well. He’ll give the Reds a better start to the day, but the end result will likely be more of the same.
