The Red Sox haven't had the best end to August and start to September. In the series in the Bronx against the Yankees, they lacked hitting; back at Fenway, they miraculously rallied to win Game 1 by walkover on a Story hit, but ended up losing the next two games. Now Boston will be at Camden Yards for a four-game series against the Orioles; it's a series the Red Sox lead 5-4 in 2026.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox fell 3-8 in the final game of the series against the Mariners; the combination of Sandoval and Bello faltered; Sandoval allowed three earned runs, and Bello relieved him, giving up four more. On a positive note, Roman Anthony hit his first home run after a 101-day absence due to injury; Durand went 0-for-4 with a defensive error; Abreu went 3-for-4. This is a team that's without Contreras, sidelined with a hamstring injury, for the first time this year.

Meanwhile, the Orioles squandered their series in Colorado against the Rockies, significantly diminishing their wild card hopes. They won the first game of that series with an epic catch by Cowser to rob a home run and win the game, but lost the following day 2-4 and Wednesday's game 5-6 in extra innings.
