We're in for plenty of big matchups on the first matchday of the Champions League group stage. This Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal CF will face off at Signal Iduna Park. Always very strong at home, BVB expects to get off to the best possible start in Europe’s premier club competition. They’re coming into the match with confidence after winning their first two Bundesliga games. The team coached by Niko Kovac intends to keep the momentum going this midweek.
After a very difficult Champions League campaign last season, Villarreal CF is out for revenge. Last season, they earned just one point in their eight Champions League matches. However, the Yellow Submarine has not prepared ideally for this new edition of the tournament. Now under the leadership of Iñigo Pérez, the Spanish club has yet to secure a win after its first four La Liga matchdays. To make matters worse, they’ve even lost their last two games...

Borussia Dortmund - Villarreal: Form Analysis
Borussia Dortmund kicked off the season with a clash against Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup. Even in front of their home fans, however, they were unable to pull off an upset against the Bavarian powerhouse (1-2). It didn’t take them long to get back on a winning streak.
The team coached by Niko Kovac has not dropped a single point after its first two Bundesliga matchdays. They defeated Hamburg SV (2-0) and also beat Hoffenheim (2-3). In their previous match, they were actually down by two goals but turned the game around in the final half-hour. To top it all off, BVB had little trouble qualifying for the round of 16 in the DFB Pokal.
Villarreal CF has yet to record a single win since the start of the season.
It’s a different story for Villarreal CF. The team has yet to record a win this season. The team started the La Liga campaign with draws against Racing Santander (2-2) and Atlético Madrid (2-2). Things have gotten even tougher since then.
The Yellow Submarine is coming off losses to Deportivo Alavés (1-0) and Deportivo La Coruña (2-3). They find themselves stuck near the bottom of the Spanish league table. Iñigo Pérez’s men were therefore unable to build up much confidence before embarking on this Champions League group stage. It won’t be easy to regain their composure ahead of what is always a very difficult road trip to Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia Dortmund & Villarreal Squad Analysis
For its Champions League opener, Borussia Dortmund will have to cope with Ramy Bensebaïni’s suspension. But that’s not all! Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can, and Giannis Konstantelias are injured. That doesn’t mean the German club can’t aim for a win on Tuesday. They have an excellent goalkeeper in Gregor Kobel. Since arriving this summer from FC Salzburg, Joane Gadou hasn’t taken long to settle into the BVB defense.
The midfield remains strong with Jobe Bellingham and Felix Nmecha. Niko Kovac also has some talented players on offense. Serhou Guirassy will be under scrutiny. He’s gotten off to a strong start this season, having already scored 2 goals and recorded 1 assist in the Bundesliga.
Serhou Guirassy has already built up a lot of confidence with Borussia Dortmund so far this season.
As for Villarreal CF, Juan Foyth will be the only player missing from the lineup. The Yellow Submarine managed to retain most of their key players over the summer. Renato Veiga remains one of the cornerstones of the Spanish club’s defense. He’ll have his work cut out for him in this Champions League showdown.
Pape Gueye remains indispensable in midfield. That area of the field also saw the arrival of Nathan Saliba during the summer transfer window; he performed very well for Canada during the 2026 World Cup. And what about Iñigo Pérez’s attacking play? Nicolas Pépé is already brimming with confidence, having scored two goals in La Liga. Georges Mikautadze has also proven decisive on two occasions. They’ll be looking to build on that momentum for this highly anticipated Champions League matchup.
