Ben Shelton will tussle with Frances Tiafoe for a spot in the semifinal of the 2025 Mubadala Citi Open on Friday.
Shelton punched his ticket to the quarterfinals with another dominant win over Gabriel Diallo of Canada 6-3 6-2. Now ranked No.8 in the world, Shelton fired 16 aces and won 93 percent of his first serves to deny Diallo any chance to scoring a break. He also broke Diallo three times behind 18 return points to secure the emphatic win.
Tiafoe ousted last year’s Mubadala Citi Open runner-up Flavio Cobolli 6-1 6-4 to reach the last eight. After gutting a three-set win over Aleksandar Kovacevic in the second round, Tiafoe produced a better all-around performance against Cobolli, winning 25 points off the first serves and breaking the Italian four times. The win catapulted Tiafoe to his third quarterfinal this year, giving him a chance to reach his first semis since the 2025 US Men’s Clay Court Championship, where he finished runner-up to Jenson Brooksby.
