Ben Shelton of the United States braces for a tough fourth-round tussle with the betting favorite Carlos Alcaraz of Spain at the French Open on Sunday.
After securing a free pass to third round with a walkover win over Hugo Gaston, a reenergized Shelton swept Mateo Gigante of Italy, the man who eliminated Stefanos Tsitsipas from this competition, 6-3 6-3 6-4. Shelton yielded only one service break while scoring 37 points on the first serves and 20 on the second. He also fired 10 aces and broke Gigante five times.
For a second straight match, Alcaraz needed an extra set to dispatch his foe. The reigning French Open champion defeated Damir Dzumhur 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-4 in the third round. Alcaraz landed 70 percent of his first serves, winning 59 points off of them and adding 22 more off the second serves. He also broke Dzumhur 7 times and scored 4 aces.
