This Wednesday is the final day of the Round-of-16 UCL fixtures. One of the last meetings forces Atalanta to confront their daunting task on the road against Bundesliga-leaders Bayern Munich. After meeting in Bergamo one week ago, they now meet at the iconic Allianz Arena.
Die Roten are renowned for dominating the German league, and it doesn’t stop there. They came second out of 36 in the UCL League Phase, finishing with a goal difference of +14, only falling short in one out of eight, plus they’re going to be participating in the semi-final of the DFK Pokal next month too.
As a result of losing their final two UCL League Phase matches, Atalanta had to settle with the a place outside of the top eight, even though they had a very promising start to the campaign. La Dea made an excellent turnaround in the play-offs, coming back from 2-0 down against Bayern-rivals Dortmund to win 4-1 in their home country. Sadly, something says this may not be as achievable a second time round, losing out on their home advantage and giving away a few too many goals.

Bayern Munich - Atalanta: Form Analysis
The visitors weren’t in a healthy way prior to the first leg, conceding multiple goals in the three matches after their 4-1 UCL victory against Dortmund, not claiming a single win. This lack of confidence likely contributed to their Champions League downfall.
Whereas, the confidence of the home side isn’t in short supply, very rarely facing defeat this season; a rather unusual home loss against Augsburg in the league is the only thing that is blocking their fantastic run of 21 games without a loss since the end of November.
Atalanta’s away UCL form really has been their kryptonite.
Since this little blip, Bayern swiftly returned to sturdy form on home soil, winning all of their last four with a total of 14 goals scored. Unfortunately, the away form of La Dea is not comparable, only just holding onto a draw against Serie A-leaders last time out, but still going four away games without a win.
Similarly, Atalanta’s away UCL form really has been their kryptonite, and they had been heavily relying on their home performances, though that didn't exactly go to plan.

Bayern Munich & Atalanta Squad Analysis
The star performances from Michael Olise sadly will not be replicated in this second leg, gaining another yellow card, as well as his two goals and one assist in the first leg, means he misses out on home turf. Also missing from Kompany’s squad due to cards is Kimmich, who has been favored the most by his manager in their European campaign.
Charles De Ketelaere is now fit and ready for action.
Both Bayern’s first and second choice goalkeepers are also absent in this game, meaning the chosen goalkeeper will be making his UCL debut. In addition, Musiala, who was just coming back into form from injury, will also miss out. In contrast, without any key absentees, perhaps La Dea has been given a saving grace. Returning at the weekend, Charles De Ketelaere is now fit and ready for action, and as Atalanta’s top direct goal contributor in the UCL, he’ll be looking to make the difference.

Bayern Munich - Atalanta Key Points
- There’s no need for the hosts to go for it, so will look to take a more lowkey approach here.
- Atalanta have failed to score in their last two UCL away games.
- Bayern have conceded just two goals in their four UCL home games.
- Both teams only scored one goal last time out.

Our Bayern Munich vs Atalanta Prediction
With such a big safety net, Bayern don’t need to do anything in this game and they’ll still have a ticket to the quarter finals. They do have key players absent, including their two goalkeepers that have UCL experience, so they won’t want to do anything stupid.
Fortunately, the hosts have alleviated a lot of the pressure, and have plenty of breathing space even if they do concede a goal or two. Whilst Atalanta will give it a good go here, and have been lucky with Die Roten’s absentees, it really is difficult to see them seriously coming back into the tie.
Our Bayern vs Atalanta Pick: Under 3.5 Goals.
