The Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles will rekindle the fire of their rivalry in Thursday’s MLB season opener at Roger Center.
The Jays are coming into the new season hoping to reinvigorate the once formidable franchise from the AL East. They ended their Spring Training in fantastic form, having won their last four games against quality opponents. Toronto taps Jose Berrios, who recorded a 3.60 ERA in 32 starts last season, to be their opening-day starter.
The Orioles, who compiled a 91-71 season record but lost to the Kansas City Royals in the Wild Card, are eager to begin a new campaign with a deeper lineup. They signed Gold Glove winners Tyler O’Neill and Gary Sanchez to improve their defense and landed the service of Charlie Morton and Andrew Kittredge to soup up their pitching rotation. Zach Effin, who posted a 2.60 ERA in 9 games after joining the Orioles in a trade with the Rays last season, will be the opening-day starter for the Orioles.

Toronto starter Jose Berrios had some so-so games against the Orioles last season, but I tried not to worry much about his opening-day form because the Blue Jays own a solid bullpen that can make some impact late in the game. The Orioles have the edge in batting firepower because of how stacked their lineup is this season.
