The Baltimore Orioles (68-48 SU, 62-54 ATS) visit the Tampa Bay Rays (58-56 SU, 57-57 ATS) in a sort of homecoming for pitcher Zach Eflin. Eflin has spent the better part of the past two years in Tampa Bay, but the Rays couldn’t get the job done this season and dealt him to Baltimore. Now he gets a crack at his former teammates on a team that actually puts up runs.
One of Eflin’s biggest problems in Tampa was that his team just didn’t score enough. He wasn’t at his best, but the Rays scored a combined five runs for him in his final three starts. He hasn’t had that problem in Baltimore, as the Orioles have scored 18 runs in his two starts for them. Perhaps that’s why he seems to be pitching better in orange and black; he doesn’t have to do things alone with this team.

When things go wrong for Zack Littell, they can really unravel. Over his past 10 starts, Littell has mostly been effective, but he’s had three starts where he’s given up at least five runs. Against the Orioles, he’s held himself in check, giving up three runs and going six innings in both of his starts against the Birds.
The difference has been whether the Rays’ bullpen can keep the Orioles from breaking the game open. At Camden Yards, they did that after Littell exited. At home, they did not, allowing six Baltimore runs in the final three innings. Littell has pitched well in his past two showings, but the Tampa Bay bullpen remains a major weakness. That’s a big problem against what has become a stronger Baltimore squad. Holding Cincinnati and Houston under wraps is one thing; slowing down the Orioles is quite another.
