The Baltimore Orioles (54-31 SU, 49-36 ATS) visit the Seattle Mariners (47-40 SU, 38-49 ATS) in a potential preview of the American League championship series. The Orioles have surged past the Yankees to take over first place in the AL East, and they now own the best record in the American League. The Orioles recently won series with Philadelphia and New York, proving they belong at the top of the AL.
Seattle, on the other hand, has been slipping against the AL’s better teams. The Mariners have just three wins over their past 12 games, and they haven’t won a series since sweeping Texas on June 16. Seattle appears to be more of a product of its schedule than a genuine contender in the American League: the Mariners are the only team in the AL West above .500, which isn’t exactly good preparation for facing teams like Cleveland and Baltimore.

Dean Kremer needs to have a good pitching performance. He’s the rare pitcher who doesn’t perform better in his home park, as his ERA on the road is more than two runs lower than his ERA at home. But he didn’t pitch well against St. Louis last time out, and he really needs to get back on track.
Logan Gilbert has been far more dependable for the Mariners. In his past four starts, all of them have gone in the win column for the Mariners, and he hasn’t come out before the end of the sixth inning. Even better, he’s held opponents to two earned runs or less in his past five starts. The total is low because he’s expected to hold a pitcher’s duel with Kremer, but Kremer is far too inconsistent right now to trust that number. Seattle hasn’t been swept in any of these losses, and it’s likely to break out if Gilbert gives them his usual strong start. Our prediction for Baltimore vs. Seattle is for the Mariners to win.
