The Baltimore Orioles (56-32 SU, 50-38 ATS) look to continue their successful run on the West Coast against the Oakland Athletics (33-57 SU, 45-45 ATS). The Athletics have actually played the Orioles better than most would expect, as they’ve split the season series and covered in three of four against Baltimore. Oakland is nowhere near competing for a postseason spot, but for whatever reason, the Athletics seem to save their best for the Birds.
The Orioles’ main worry is actually hitting the baseball. Baltimore’s offense is usually its biggest strength, but the Orioles seem to have left their bats back in Maryland. The problem hasn’t come up because the Orioles have pitched well enough to win, but Baltimore has only topped four runs twice in its past nine contests. On this western swing, the Birds have only plated 12 runs in four games.

Cade Povich gave one ugly start in his debut, but he’s pitched well ever since then. In his only other road start, he held New York to one run in 4.2 innings, and the Birds have won three of his past four starts.He is not a strikeout pitcher, which might not be the worst thing against this lineup. Oakland’s poor batting average shows that their problems aren’t just because of strikeout issues. They don’t get quality contact on the ball, and they don’t put up many runs.
Luis Medina doesn’t need to be told that. He’s made six starts for Oakland this year, and the Athletics have given him two runs or less for support on five occasions. Medina might as well be Mr. Under this season, as five of his six starts have played to the under and the sixth missed it by half a run. With Baltimore not hitting well and Povich and Medina both pitching fairly decently, a low total makes sense. Our prediction for Baltimore vs. Oakland is Under 8.5 Runs
