Austin FC hosts Houston Dynamo with a chance to put its in-state rival in a tight spot for the playoff chase. Austin holds a six-point lead over Houston and currently holds the last automatic bid to the playoffs. The Verde also have a match in hand over Houston, so they’ve got some breathing room if this match does go the wrong way.
That said, history says it’s not likely to go the wrong way. Austin has played very well in its past few matches, only taking a loss at Seattle since May. Since the calendar turned, the Verde have picked up seven points in three matches, including wins at Los Angeles Galaxy and DC United. The offense has even picked up in the process, as Austin has scored at least twice in its past four victories. The issue is the defense; Austin hasn’t kept a clean sheet since facing Colorado in June.

Houston comes into this match on fumes, as it’s just been through a grueling Leagues Cup campaign. Austin didn’t qualify for Leagues Cup and has been able to rest, but the Dynamo had to play three matches against sides from Liga MX during that stretch.
That’s likely to weigh on Houston, especially given the Dynamo’s recent form. Houston managed to upset San Diego at the start of July, but they’ve gone just 2-5-1 overall in MLS play and 2-8-1 overall over the past two months. With Austin rested and playing at home, this doesn’t seem to be the match where Houston makes a push toward the playoff.
