The Atlanta Hawks will try to get back on the right track as they take on the skidding Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center on Sunday.
The Hawks’ four-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers 121-38, dropping their record three games below .500 at 35-32 . Coming off a 35-point, 12-assist outing in a 123-110 Hawks win over the Charlotte Hornets last week, Trae Young was held down to 17 points on 6 for 18 shooting by the Clippers’ swarming defense, who clamped down Atlanta to just 42 percent field goal shooting.
The Nets have lost their last three games since that shocking win over the Lakers, 111-108, last week. However, Brooklyn has been competitive in these losses, falling only to the Cleveland Cavaliers by five points (104-109), Chicago Bulls by six points (110-116) and their most recent game against Boston Celtics by two points (115-113). The Nets may be headed to the NBA lottery again, but their admirable showing against elite competitions in the last few games is a good indication that they are in the right direction.

The Atlanta Hawks find themselves in a tough matchup with the Nets, against whom they are 0-7 in their last seven meetings. Brooklyn is out of the running for a playoff spot but has been a scrappy bunch in the past few weeks, going toe-to-toe against elite teams such as the Cavaliers and the Celtics. For the first time since their January 28 loss to the Houston Rockets 98-100, the Hawks failed to barge into the century mark as they struggled to get into their flow offensively against one of the toughest defensive team in the NBA. Honestly, I would have picked the Nets to win outright at +180 if they had Cam Thomas in the lineup. But since one of their leading scorers has now been ruled out for the remainder of the season because of a hamstring injury, the Nets would have to rely on Cameron Johnson, Noah Clowney, and Nic Claxton to keep at pace with the Hawks’ high-octane offense.
