The Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers are set to face off today at Globe Life Field, with both teams looking to gain momentum as they push through the second half of the MLB season. Atlanta arrives in Arlington hoping to put a rough series finale behind them after falling 9-3 to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
With that defeat, the Braves dropped to 44-57 overall, sitting in fourth place in the NL East. Their upcoming road trip will take them to Kansas City for a set against the Royals, making this matchup with the Rangers an important opportunity to reset.
On the other side, the Texas Rangers are trying to keep their recent positive stretch going after a 2-1 win over the Oakland Athletics. That victory brought Texas to 53-50 on the season, good enough for third place in the competitive AL West. Following this series with Atlanta, the Rangers will hit the road for a series against division rivals, the Los Angeles Angels.
Both clubs enjoyed a rest day on Thursday, which should allow their rotations and lineups to be fresh for this interleague clash. On the mound for Atlanta will be left-hander Joey Wentz, who enters the game with a 2-1 record and a 5.71 ERA. Wentz is coming off a solid but short outing against the New York Yankees, where he threw four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two. The Braves will be looking for him to build on that performance, especially against a Rangers team that has struggled to score consistently in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, the Rangers will counter with veteran right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, who’s been sharp all year and especially dominant since returning to the rotation. Eovaldi boasts a 7-3 record and a dazzling 1.58 ERA. In his most recent start against the Astros, he threw 7.2 innings of one-run ball, striking out eight and allowing just five hits. His consistency and command have been a stabilizing force for the Texas rotation.
