The San Diego Padres will take on the Atlanta Braves in a matchup between National League elites at Petco Park on Thursday.
The Padres will try to bounce back from a disappointing postseason, where their title dreams got crushed by their NL West rivals and eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres finished their last five games of Spring Training with two wins, two ties and one loss. Michael King, who posted a 13-9 record with 2.95 ERA and 201 strikeouts in his first season with the Padres, will start on Opening Day.
The Braves have a lot of reasons to be optimistic about this coming season. One of them is getting back the service of Ronald Acuna Sr, who spent majority of the 2024 season rehabbing his surgically repaired knee. Acuna will not play on Thursday since he’s still on a 10-day injury list, but he’s expected to make a huge impact for the Braves, who designate Chris Sale as their opening day starter.

I got the Braves winning by at least two runs on Thursday. Chris Sale has been potent in his last three outings against the Padres, allowing three runs with 22 strikeouts. King is an excellent pitcher, too, but I give a slight edge to Sale, who had a phenomenal comeback season last year. Regarding firepower, the Padres are indeed loaded with weapons from top to bottom of their batting rotations. But again, I believe that Sale is that good of a pitcher, and his effort through the first 6 to 7 innings can dictate the outcome of this game.
