The Pittsburgh Pirates (46-45, 23-22 Home) hope to keep the momentum going after ending their recent road trip with two consecutive wins today, as they begin a three-game home series against the Atlanta Braves (52-37, 25-19 Away).
It will not be an easy task, of course, as the Braves are the NL East leaders and a solid road team. However, the Braves are coming off a homestand in which they went 3-4, including losses in their last two games.
Paul Skenes is scheduled to get the start for the Pirates. Skenes is 6-8 in 18 starts with a 3.62 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. He has gone 3-4 in ten home starts with a 3.02 ERA and a .200 OBA. However, he was hit hard in his last outing (@ Cincinnati), lasting only four innings and giving up seven earned runs before getting pulled.
Atlanta is scheduled to give young Hurston Waldrep his second start. In his first start last week against the Cardinals, he went 5 1/3 innings and gave up five hits (including one home run) and three earned runs while striking out four and walking one. He previously logged two innings in relief on June 256 vs. the Giants, where he struggled with his control, giving up four walks while striking out three.

Last year, I would have said to trust in Skenes and take the Pirates to win. But this year, I can’t do that. He is still a solid pitcher, but he hasn’t been reliable this season. However, with how the Pirates have been hitting (.328 over the last week) Skenes doesn’t have to win the game for them. However, the Braves hit .269 over the last week and recorded 44 runs across six games. So, they’ll need Skenes to have a solid day at home.
