The New York Mets (44-62, 22-30 Home) will host the Atlanta Braves (62-43, 30-23 Away) in a three-game series at Citi Field in Queens, NY. Game 1 gets underway today at 7:10 p.m. EST with coverage provided by MLB.TV.
After losing the first two games of their weekend series to the Dodgers, each by a single run, the Mets bounced back to win the finale yesterday, 11-3. Atlanta clinched the series win over the Orioles with a 3-2 win in extra innings yesterday (F/11).
The Mets will hope Zac Thornton can keep the good times rolling from the mound to start the day. Thornton has pitched in just four games this season, but has a 1-1 record with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. In his two road games, he has posted a 3.48 ERA, and opponents are only hitting .194 against him.
As for the Braves, Martin Perez is scheduled to start. He has gone 6-6 in 19 appearances (15 starts) with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Perez is 3-4 in 11 appearances (8 starts) at home with a 2.72 ERA and a .196 OBA. Perez struggled the last time he saw the Mets (July 5), lasting just 4 1/3 innings and allowing six hits and five runs (four earned).

It is worth pointing out that the Braves are the NL East leaders and the Mets are the last-place team in the division. But neither lineup has been hitting well in recent games (Mets--.216; Braves-- .236). Perez has gone five innings in just one of his last three four-starts, but pulling him is not a bad thing when the bullpen has one of the lowest ERAs in the game, 3.23. Thornton doesn’t have much experience, but what we’ve seen from him so far has been good. But the Braves are division leaders for a reason. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Mets win outright, but the run line is the better bet for today.
