The Atlanta Braves (61-55 SU, 51-65 ATS) conclude their series with the Colorado Rockies (43-75 SU, 59-59 ATS), an opponent they have mostly dominated. That’s the kind of opponent Atlanta needs right now, because the Braves have seen their playoff lead almost completely collapse. Atlanta now only leads the Mets by half a game for the final playoff spot and has to worry more about hanging on than preparing for the Phillies.
Colorado is simply playing out the string. The Rockies knew they were never going to compete this season, and they’ve not come close to changing that expectation. Only the sheer ineptitude of the White Sox has kept Colorado from being the worst team in the majors this year, as the Rockies are tied with the Marlins for the National League’s worst record.

After a bit of a rough start, Spencer Schwellenbach seems to be getting the hang of pitching in the major leagues. He hasn’t come out before the seventh inning in any of his past five starts, and Atlanta is 4-1 in his past five trips to the mound. As inconsistent as Atlanta has been with its bats, its bullpen has been reliable. When the Braves get a lead through six innings, they’re usually good value to hold it.
Kyle Freeland has mostly pitched acceptably this season, but he’s surrounded by the usual poor team. It’s difficult to get results in Denver, especially when you’re only average at getting strikeouts. Freeland tends to find bats a fair amount, and with what he’s got behind him, contact isn’t likely to work out very well. With the Braves breaking out of their slump last time and the Rockies’ history in series finales lately, our prediction for Atlanta vs. Colorado is Braves -1.5.
