The Atlanta Braves (50-39 SU, 41-48 ATS) visit the Arizona Diamonbacks (45-46 SU, 46-45 ATS) in a series opener that sees both teams send top pitchers to the hill. Chris Sale has experienced a career renaissance in Atlanta, pitching to an 11-3 mark and a 2.71 ERA to this point in the season. He’s pitched very well since getting blown up by Oakland, holding five straight opponents to two runs or less.
The Braves themselves have needed the sharp pitching performances, because the offense has been spotty at best. Atlanta has stepped up in its past four games with at least five runs on the board, but in its previous five games, the Braves couldn’t get more than three on the board. But when the pitching is as sharp as Atlanta has been, a big night at the plate isn’t necessary.

Zac Gallen has been pedestrian on the road, but at Chase Field, he’s been virtually unhittable. He did turn in two less-than-stellar performances in May at home, but he was also dealing with a strained hamstring that landed him on the injured list in June. He gave a great performance in his one home start since his return, but it also came against Oakland.
That’s the good news for Arizona. The bad news is that Atlanta has figured out it can outlast Gallen. Last year, the Braves faced him twice and wound up hammering the Diamondbacks’ beleaguered bullpen. Gallen left with the lead both times he faced Atlanta and watched from the dugout as the Braves blasted his teammates in the final three innings of the game to turn wins into losses. With Sale set to match him, this is a situation where Atlanta’s bullpen should make the difference. Our prediction for Atlanta vs. Arizona is for the Braves to win.
