The Copa del Rey semi-finals bring us a Basque derby! The first leg between Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad will be played this Wednesday at the Estadio San Mamés. After a run of six games without a win in La Liga, the home side finally got back to winning ways. Last weekend, they beat Levante 4-2 and climbed to 10th place in the standings. Already out of contention for European competition in the league, Ernesto Valverde's team is hoping to take advantage of the Copa del Rey to secure European qualification. They expect to take a step toward qualification on Wednesday.

Real Sociedad has other ideas. They are doing much better in La Liga, sitting in 8th place in the standings, just three points behind the top six. They are also unbeaten in their last seven league games. In early February, they managed to hold Athletic Bilbao to a 1-1 draw away from home. Pellegrino Matarazzo's men are hoping to do the same in the Copa del Rey. A draw would put them in a strong position ahead of the second leg at home.
