Aston Villa return home to Villa Park seeking their first win this season when confronting Crystal Palace. They began the season with a stern and uninspiring goalless draw in which defense was more essential than offense. Since the opening match, however, Villa have slid through two successive defeats and at the moment have a meager single point from three matches.

More problematic has been a failure to locate the net at all, with zero goals in those games. Lacking that final edge when it matters most has been conspicuous, although at the other end of the pitch, they have not collapsed by conceding more than a few. Precariously perched in a position just above the drop zone, a catalyst is required to raise spirits and move their campaign in a positive direction.

Crystal Palace have been a tad more positive but winless as well. They started by registering a creditable performance away at one of the league’s giants and not being broken. They also shared the points in their second match, this time at home in a 1–1 draw that was a testimony to both their grit and their periods of sloppiness at the back.

Two points from two games have Palace just ahead of Villa, and it has shown defensive resilience and an ability to grind out results. They are, however, seeking their inaugural win in order to secure a mid-table berth. Surprisingly, Palace’s recent record versus Villa has also been excellent, and this has instilled confidence for this match.
