The task proved too daunting for AS Monaco in Game 1 at the Peace and Friendship Stadium. With a packed schedule of late, the team’s physical fatigue was bound to show in this fourth game in seven days. And that’s exactly what happened to Monaco, who held on for about ten minutes before finally succumbing. It was a lopsided loss for Elie Okobo’s teammates, who couldn’t withstand the Greek onslaught (91-70). Clumsy during this game with a dismal 4-for-28 from 3-point range, Monaco will need to get their act together in Game 2 if they hope to return to the principality with a win under their belt and regain home-court advantage. But physically, will AS Monaco have recovered from all the energy expended lately?
Finishing first at the end of the regular season, Olympiacos showed that it would take a strong performance to keep them out of the Final Four. Spurred on by their home crowd, MVP Sasha Vezenkov and his teammates did exactly what was expected of them: they dictated the pace, played a half-court game, and alternated between inside and outside shots. More skillful, the Greeks executed their game plan, relying in particular on their defense, which dismantled Monaco. This first victory ended a four-game losing streak against Monaco, and this Thursday, Evan Fournier and his teammates will look to knock out their opponents to take a commanding lead in this quarterfinal series. And having won 21 of its last 22 home games across all competitions, Olympiacos is a formidable opponent that’s very difficult to beat in front of its home crowd.
