Things are now starting to get quite serious at the WTA event in Wuhan, known also as the Wuhan Open. We've reached the quarter-final stages, and on Friday, there's a heavyweight clash between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. This is a match betwen two Grand Slam winners, and also a match between two top-10 players, with Sabalenka currently ranking as the world number one. Elena Rybakina is currently the world number nine.
Sabalenka hasn't needed to be at her best to reach the quarters, and she certainly wasn't when she beat Sramkova in her first match for nearly a month. She stepped on the gas a little to beat Samsonova more convincingly last time out. However, we shouldn't assume that the player from Belarus will make light work of this. Rybakina has a promising record against Sabalenka, while she's looked in strong form in Wuhan so far. An interesting match awaits.

Of course Aryna Sabalenka is the favorite ahead of this clash, and we can't really argue with that, but we could argue that she's a slightly stronger favorite than she should be. After all, the Belarusian did have a little wobble against Sramkova the other day, losing a set, so it's far from difficult to see a player of Rybakina's quality making life tough for the world number one.
Let's face it, the Kazakh player knows how to trouble Sabalenka, winning at least one set in all of her 13 completed matches against the recent US Open winner.
