The Royals own a 35-18 record at Kauffman Stadium, which is why they’re sitting in a second-place tie with Minnesota and holding on to the last playoff spot.
Kansas City has been much weaker away from home, but they’ve gotten to play at home since the All-Star break and have surged out of the gate. Getting the White Sox in their first series after the break was also a plus, as they’ve won all four games since the break and only had one even get put into a save situation. Jordan Montgomery is coming off some rather forgettable performances. Montgomery hasn’t been pitching for a month, as he last threw on June 27 before going to the injured list with a knee issue. Montgomery has actually been better away from home than in Phoenix, posting a 4.80 ERA on the road. But in his past six games, he had three starts where he gave up at least six runs.
Alec Marsh has been better, but inconsistent. He usually has one bad start out of three, and he’s had a pair of solid starts in two of his past three outings against Cleveland and St. Louis. Like his team, he’s been far sharper at home, posting a 3.97 ERA. With Montgomery coming off injury, it doesn’t make sense to trust the Diamondbacks in this spot. Our prediction for Arizona vs. Kansas City is for the Royals to win.
