It’s Round-of-16 time for the current world champions on Tuesday, when Argentina and Egypt will clash in Atlanta, Georgia. Can the champs move one step closer to defending their title?
On the face of it, up against Cape Verde, the current World Cup holders looked to have an easy task during the Round-of-32, but it was anything but plain sailing for Lionel Scaloni’s men, who were pushed to the brink by the brave minnows, who by tying in regulation time pulled off a huge upset. Fortunately, thanks to the head of Cristian Romero, the Argentines got through, but they’ll need to sharpen up if they want to progress further.
In the early betting, ‘Both Teams to Score’ appeals at odds of +140. We know all about Argentina’s offensive strength, but we’ve seen that they can be exposed at the back, so don’t be too shocked if the Egyptians, who have plenty of offensive quality, find the net in this game.

In the final third, we can’t really criticize what the Argentinians have done at this tournament, with Lionel Scaloni’s men scoring multiple goals in each of their four games. Sure, at times, they’ve seemed a little overly reliant on Messi at times, but with the magician delivering with such regularity, there’s not much wrong with that, while it’s not as if Messi is the only Argentine to have created chances at this tournament. Lionel Scaloni won’t be looking to change too much, even after watching his team struggle to get the better of Cape Verde. One definite change will see Facundo Medina be replaced. The Marseille defender picked up an injury late on last time out and is unlikely to feature here. The experienced Nicolas Tagliafico is an obvious replacement. Other than that, we can expect the same XI to take to the field.
Unfortunately, Karim Hafez, whose fine cross set up the opening goal against Australia, will probably need to be replaced after picking up a knock during the Round-of-32.
