Matchday 16 of the CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup is right around the corner, and one of the headline fixtures features Argentina taking on Colombia. The match is set for Wednesday at 7:00 PM ET at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
Argentina has had its spot at the next World Cup locked up for quite some time. With 34 points from 15 matches, the reigning champions are already guaranteed to finish first in South American qualifying, holding a 10-point lead over the second-place team with just three games to go.
Colombia, on the other hand, still has work to do. Sitting sixth in the standings, they’re currently in position for direct qualification, but the margin is slim, just three points ahead of Venezuela in seventh, a spot that would send them to a playoff. The pressure is on for the Colombians, who can’t afford any slip-ups in the final stretch and will be looking to pull off an upset in Buenos Aires early Wednesday morning.

Argentina - Colombia: Form Analysis
Everything is going smoothly for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The reigning world champions have already booked their place at next summer’s tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. With 11 wins in 15 matches, Argentina left no doubt in qualifying and has locked up first place in the CONMEBOL standings with three games still to play. Lionel Scaloni’s squad is on a roll, coming into this match with four straight wins.
Argentina is officially qualified for the 2026 World Cup.
Colombia, meanwhile, is in a much tougher spot. They're aiming to follow Argentina to the World Cup, and for now, they're on the right side of the line, sitting sixth in the standings, good enough for automatic qualification. But their margin is razor-thin, just three points ahead of seventh-place Venezuela, which would mean a playoff. Colombia hasn't won in five matches and has lost its last three qualifiers away from home. Playing on the road against the group leaders, they'll face another serious challenge.

Argentina & Colombia Squad Analysis
Even though Argentina has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, they’re not taking their foot off the gas in these final qualifiers. For this international window, head coach Lionel Scaloni is relying on his biggest stars. In goal, Emiliano Martinez will look to keep another clean sheet, with Cristian Romero and Leonardo Balerdi expected to anchor the defense in front of him. Rodrigo De Paul remains a key figure in midfield, and Lionel Messi made a substitute appearance in the first match of this June window against Chile. It was Julian Alvarez who scored the only goal in that game.
Alvarez also netted the lone goal in Argentina’s win over Peru last Friday.
Colombia, for its part, still has enough talent to give Argentina trouble. The Tricolor can lean on a strong center-back duo of Davinson Sanchez and Yerry Mina. The player drawing the most attention is 33-year-old James Rodriguez, who continues to play a key role for the national team. Néstor Lorenzo also has a couple of forwards capable of producing goals at any moment in Cucho Hernandez and Jhon Duran.

Our Argentina vs Colombia Prediction
Argentina has already locked up first place in the CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Still, La Albiceleste doesn’t look like they’re slowing down anytime soon; they’ve won their last four matches and are riding a strong wave of momentum. Lionel Scaloni’s squad will be looking to keep that streak alive in the coming months. They have everything it takes to grab another win, especially against a Colombia side that’s lost three straight on the road.
