by Lou Aguila in ATP Monte Carlo Masters Picks
ATP veteran Gael Monfils will attempt to launch another giant-killing run at Monaco, starting off with Andrey Rublev of Russia in the second round of the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday.
After a solid campaign during the Sunshine double, Monfils opened his clay court season with a 4-6 6-1 6-1 win over Fabian Marozsan of Hungary in the first round. The Former French Open semi-finalist showed that he’s still got the competitive juice to compete against younger foes at age 38, completing his comeback from a set down by winning all except one of his serves and breaking Marozsan five times in the match.
Meanwhile, Rublev seeks to end a three-game losing streak and claim his first clay court win this year. The Russian racked up five impressive wins to capture the Qatar Open in February. However, things had gone south for Rublev, who lost all his opening match in his next three tournaments, including the Indian Wells and Miami Open. Rublev is 9-7 this season.

Our Andrey Rublev vs Gael Monfils Prediction
Gael Monfils will present an acid test to Andrey Rublev, who is a former Monte Carlo champion but has been erratic over the past 12 months. Monfils enters Wednesday’s duel with the Russian holding a 15-5 record, while Rublev is a disappointing 9-7 this season. Although Rublev had already won a title this year at the Qatar Open, dropping the next three matches after that run sums up the pattern of inconsistency that has plagued his career. Make no mistake, Rublev is a formidable opponent on clay, holding a 137-72 record or a 65 percent win rate. However, I also can’t ignore that he hasn’t been sharp over the past five or six weeks and that his current form makes him vulnerable to a hungry, battle-tested Monfils in the second round. Our betting prediction for Gael Monfils vs. Andrey Rublev: Gael Monfils will win.
