Last season, Lyon earned 21 out of a possible 24 points in the group stage of the previous Europa League. Les Gones have once again dropped to the second-tier European competition after failing to overcome Fenerbahçe in the Champions League qualifiers. They will begin another Europa League campaign, where they are among the favorites to win it all; however, a tough first challenge awaits them against Anderlecht in Belgium.

Anderlecht finished fourth in the last Jupiler Pro League. They have had a truly busy start to the season, having to navigate three difficult ties: first against Hammarby, then against PAOK, and finally against Almaty. In other words, the Belgian side's season only began in late July, but they have already traveled to Sweden, Greece, and Kazakhstan, not to mention their domestic fixtures.

After four matches, Lyon sits fifth in the current Ligue 1 season. In the capital, they were unable to break the deadlock against Paris FC, producing a lackluster attack, likely missing Fofana, who has left for Sunderland.
