Alexander Zverev and Alejandro Tabilo will face each other this weekend in the first round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
There is a significant gap in skill level between these two players, with the German logically favored to win this first round after his impressive performances in Toronto and Cincinnati. In Canada, he reached the semifinals, where he was cruelly eliminated by Russia's Khachanov in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-7). In Cincinnati, he came close to reaching the final, after losing in the semifinals to Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz. However, he had overcome a tough obstacle in the quarterfinals against Ben Shelton. Reloaded for the US Open, he should breeze through this first round.
His opponent, Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, has only shone in Monte Carlo this season, on clay, reaching the round of 16. Apart from this impressive run, the ATP tour has been quite challenging for him: eliminated in the second round at the French Open, in the first round at Cincinnati, and in the qualifiers at Winston Salem... the results have been less than fruitful for him, who will be playing in his third US Open. Facing the world's third-ranked player, the task seems far too daunting.
