by Erik Gibbs in Champions League Picks
Ajax takes on Benfica Lisbon this Tuesday in a Champions League group stage match. Ajax have been inconsistent of late. In the Dutch league they managed only one win in their past four games, drawing with Heerenveen and then suffering defeats at Utrecht and surprise visitors Excelsior. The loss at home to Excelsior was particularly damaging – Ajax controlled possession but conceded two quick goals.
Overall, Ajax's form has been underwhelming, with their Champions League campaign also disrupted by heavy defeats to Marseille (4-0) and Chelsea (5-1). In short, Ajax enter this fixture on uneven footing, needing an improved defensive effort.
Benfica Lisbon arrive in Amsterdam in mixed but generally better shape. Domestically, the Portuguese champions have produced dominant results – a 5-0 home win over Arouca and a 3-0 victory at Vitória Guimarães highlight their attacking firepower. Even so, they have dropped points at home as well, notably blowing a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with lowly Casa Pia last weekend.
In Europe, Benfica's campaign has been difficult too. They have yet to win in a tough Champions League group, drawing 1-1 away to Sporting CP and losing 0-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen. Those results suggest occasional defensive lapses. Benfica will need to rediscover their domestic confidence to make an impact against Ajax.

Our Ajax vs Benfica Lisbon Prediction
On Ajax's side, the standout player is Dutch striker Wout Weghorst. Weghorst is the team's leading scorer and has contributed in recent high-scoring games; his height and strength make him a constant threat on set pieces and crosses. Alongside him, Danish forward Kasper Dolberg has chipped in important goals – he came off the bench to score in the Excelsior match, demonstrating composure in front of goal. Midfielder Kenneth Taylor has also been influential, providing energy and creative passing through the middle to link defense and attack. These attacking players give Ajax the firepower to challenge Benfica if they get opportunities.
Benfica's strengths lie in the performances of Georgiy Sudakov and Vangelis Pavlidis. Sudakov opened the scoring in the Casa Pia draw with a wonderful volley, illustrating his technique and confidence on the wing. Pavlidis, operating as the centre-forward, calmly converted a penalty for Benfica's second goal in that game, showing his sharp finishing. Both players possess skill and composure to break down defenses. If Sudakov and Pavlidis combine well on the attack, they will repeatedly test Ajax's unsettled back line.
Considering recent form and key performers, Benfica have a slight edge. Ajax's defense has looked vulnerable, whereas Benfica's attack has been more clinical. Overall, Benfica's scoring ability and experience suggest they will get the better of this contest. Our prediction for Ajax vs Benfica Lisbon: Under 2.5 goals.
