In this round of 16 of the WTA 1000 Cincinnati tournament, Kazakh Yulia Putintseva takes on American and local Cori Gauff for a place in the last 16. Yulia Putintseva won her first round tie against qualifier Harriet Dart in a 3-set match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. This was her first match on the hard court since March and her quarter-final loss to world No.19 Victoria Azarenka at the Miami tournament.
For her part, Cori Gauff, seeded number 2, enters this tournament directly in the round of 16. Winner of this tournament last year against Karolina Muchova, the American is here to defend her title in front of her home crowd. A semi-finalist at the Indian Wells hard-court tournament last March, Cori Gauff also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year.
These fine performances were repeated on other surfaces, with the American also reaching the semi-finals of the Rome tournament against Iga Swiatek and the semi-finals of Roland Garros against the same opponent. She is sure to win her first match quickly to move a step closer to the final, where she will defend her title.
