The Yale Bulldogs (22-9 SU, 17-12 ATS) return to the NCAA tournament and face the Auburn Tigers (27-7 SU, 21-11-2 ATS) in a first-round matchup. Yale gave a credible showing in losses against Gonzaga and Kansas, losing both games by 15 points. However, the Bulldogs didn’t record any strong wins during the season, as their only win over a top 100 team came at home against Princeton.
Auburn comes in hot after blitzing its way to the SEC tournament and winning seven of its past eight games. However, that achievement doesn’t look as strong as it did after the SEC’s pratfall on the NCAA tournament’s first day. Of the three teams Auburn beat on the way to the SEC title, two of them have already been eliminated from the tournament. The Tigers still boast a lightning-quick squad and an excellent defense, but there are now genuine questions about how prepared they are for the tournament.

The teams that usually win these types of game hit a lot of 3-pointers, such as Oakland beating Kentucky. Yale isn’t a great shooting team and Auburn has showed that it can lock down opponents from anywhere on the floor. The Tigers’ defense ranked fourth in efficiency because they rarely give up open looks.
Yale’s other big problem is that it has a matchup nightmare in Johni Broome. Broome used to terrorize opponents like this when he played in the Ohio Valley Conference, and he’s kept up those performances since moving to the SEC. The Bulldogs have some size inside in Danny Wolf, but Wolf is much greener than Broome and doesn’t have the strength Broome brings to the position. Because of the Tigers’ defense, experience and skill advantages, our prediction for Yale vs. Auburn is Auburn -12.5.
