World’s No.2 Coco Gauff of the United States will open her Cincinnati Open campaign against Xinyu Wang of China in the second round on Sunday.
Gauff targets a better result in Cincinnati following a fourth-round flameout in Montreal. After surviving two three-set matches against Danielle Rose Collins 7-5 4-6 7-6(2) and Veronika Kudermetova 4-6 7-5 6-2, Gauff fell prey to Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko, who would go on to win the 2025 Canadian Open championship. With the loss, Gauff has now dropped three of her last five matches since winning her second Grand Slam title at the 2025 French Open.
Wang will walk onto the court on Sunday with a 4-1 record in her last five wins. Her last win, a straight-set win over Emilliana Arango 7-6(1) 6-3, sets her up for a second-round clash with Gauff. Before arriving in Cincinnati, Wang had posted three wins in a row to reach the semifinal of the Prague Open in the last week of July. Wang lost to Linda Noskova 4-6, 1-6 in the final four, but this run has helped Wang gain momentum for her US Open buildup.
