The West Virginia Mountaineers will be heading out west for a Friday night game against the No. 23 BYU Cougars. Gametime at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, UT, is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. EST on Friday, Oct. 3.
Big 12 play has not gotten off to a good start for the Mountaineers with big losses to Kansas (41-10) and Utah (48-14). The running game was effective in both; they ran for 189 yards against Kansas and for over 240 yards against Utah. But the passing game was an ineffective afterthought in both, and their defense couldn’t find an answer for either Kansas or Utah’s offense. With Nico Marchioll out with a foot injury, West Virginia has yet to find someone who can step up in his place. It is certainly not going to be easy for the next quarterback to stand out against BYU’s top ten defense (No. 7 total yards, No. 8 against the run, No. 4 in scoring). BYU also has a top ten run game (No. 9, 251.3 yards per game) led by junior running back LJ Martin, who has run for 100+ yards in three of four games this season.

Games like this one can be a little tricky to bet on. BYU will win the game, but there is no value in betting on the Cougars ML. A 19.5-point spread is not insurmountable, but if the Cougars step off the gas in the second half, WVU could score in garbage time. As for the TOTAL, BYU is averaging just under 40 points a game, but if they shut the Mountaineers out ,can we trust the Cougars to run up the score? Can we trust that they will not? I don’t think WVU will keep this one interesting, and that BYU will blow them out of the water and easily cover the spread.
