West Ham face Chelsea in a Premier League match on Friday, and West Ham have struggled to start the new season strongly. The London side finished 14th last campaign and have continued to look disjointed under new boss Graham Potter. They emerged from a difficult pre-season with mixed results (beating Lille on penalties in a friendly but losing to Manchester United and drawing other games) and fell 3-0 to newly promoted Sunderland in their Premier League opener.
That heavy defeat, with struggling attack and defensive lapses, has left the Hammers seeking confidence at home. West Ham’s squad has undergone turnover: attacking talent like Declan Rice and Mohammed Kudus have departed, while new signings such as Lucas Paquetá (arrived from Arsenal), Malick Diouf (wing-back) and goalkeeper Mads Hermansen are integrating. The team showed some offensive spark in friendlies (Paquetá scored, new striker Niclas Füllkrug got a goal in pre-season), but early-season form suggests they still need time to click.
Chelsea, in contrast, have had a fairly encouraging opening to their campaign. Under Mauricio Pochettino, the Blues continue to rebuild. In friendlies they looked strong – beating AC Milan 4-1 and Leverkusen 2-0 – and even won the Club World Cup in June, showing depth in their squad. In the Premier League they drew 0-0 away to Crystal Palace last week.

Our West Ham vs Chelsea Prediction
Key players for West Ham include captain Jarrod Bowen and the Brazilian playmaker Lucas Paquetá. Bowen is the veteran leader on the wing who will carry much of the Hammers’ attacking burden; he has been delivering consistently and will need to produce chances against Chelsea. Paquetá, a creative midfielder, impressed in pre-season and even scored from the penalty spot in a friendly, so he will be central to West Ham’s forward transitions.
New striker Niclas Füllkrug also merits mention – his layoff has ended and he partnered Bowen in attack during pre-season, though he remains untested in the league. For Chelsea, standout contributors include Brazilian youngsters Cole Palmer and João Pedro (the Portuguese forward). Palmer has been influential in friendlies, scoring multiple goals against Milan, and he offers speed and skill on the flank.
This London derby is expected to be tight. Both clubs have star attacking players but also unresolved defensive questions – West Ham have not yet found consistency under Potter, while Chelsea still mold their new-look side. On balance, the match could go either way. West Ham’s home crowd may give them a lift, but Chelsea’s recent form and depth might edge the contest.
A narrow win for either team or a draw seems most likely in this early-season clash, with perhaps a slight advantage toward Chelsea if the Hammers’ firepower (Bowen, Paquetá) is kept in check. Overall, expect a close, low-scoring game. Our prediction for West Ham vs. Chelsea: Over 2.5 goals.
