The New York Yankees opened as the heavy favorites -272 ahead of their series finale against the Washington Nationals at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees won the first two games behind exceptional performances by their starters and a more productive offense.
New York is still very much in contention for the AL East title and an outright postseason berth after racking up three wins in a row to improve their record to 72-60. The Yankees currently sit in third place in their division, trailing the 73-60 Boston Red Sox by a half game and the 77-56 Toronto Blue Jays by 4.5 games, with still a month of regular-season baseball left.
Washington has their last four games, plunging them further into the bottom of the NL East with a 53-79 record. The Nationals’ offense has slowed down in their last five games, during which they have averaged 3.4 runs per game on a .239 batting average. Pitching continues to be mediocre in this stretch for the Nationals, who have posted a 5.93 ERA and allowed almost two homers per game (1.6 HR).

New York is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Washington and 8-3 SU in its last 11 games. Moreover, the Yankees will be starting their ace hurler, Max Fried, on Wednesday. Fried, who threw six scoreless innings in his last start against the Red Sox, is expected to give Washington’s big bats a lot of trouble because of his gaudy 3.14 ERA this season.
On the other hand, Washington is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games and 2-5 SU in its last 7 games when playing on the road against the NY Yankees. Although Washington is averaging 5.5 runs per game, their starting pitchers have conceded a horrendous 9.00 ERA in the last five games, which makes them all the more vulnerable against a high-powered club like the Yankees.
