The Twins won the first game of the series between the Nationals and the Twins 1-0 in a game in which Minnesota allowed three hits, the same number as the Nats. Game 2 followed a bit more of the expected pattern, not because of the winner, as the Twins lost with Ryan as a -255 favorite, but because there were more runs; specifically, the Nationals won Game 2 9-3. For the visiting team, García hit his eighth home run, Abrams hit his 23rd double of his season, and Alex Call hit another home run. The Twins, like the Nats, had 12 hits, but the leadoff hitters only managed two. Correa went 1-for-5, and the team left a total of 23 baserunners.
After losing with Ryan pitching in Game 2, and on the cusp of series against the Red Sox, Tigers, and Royals that will decide whether the Twins can compete for a wild card, winning the series against the Nationals on Sunday at Target Field is essential; even more so, betting sites believe they can do so, setting them as -170 favorites.
The Nationals will insist Irving pitch Game 3 even after his dismal finish to July and taking it to June. Irving is coming off a four-inning failure against the Reds, allowing five ERs, although it was a game the Nats ultimately won 10-8.
