The Los Angeles Angels and Washington Nationals will meet today at Angel Stadium in a cross-league contest between two rebuilding teams trying to evaluate young talent while remaining competitive.
The Angels have had a rocky June, winning just three of their last ten games. They’ve struggled mightily since losing Mike Trout again to injury and haven’t been able to generate consistent offense. Zach Neto and Logan O’Hoppe have been bright spots, but the lack of production from veteran bats like Anthony Rendon has been glaring. The bullpen has also been inconsistent, often giving up leads late in games. Still, at home, the Angels are always a bit more dangerous.
Washington, meanwhile, has quietly overperformed expectations. They recently split a series with the Mets and took two of three from the Rockies. The young core — led by CJ Abrams and Keibert Ruiz — has developed quickly, and Joey Meneses remains a clutch contributor in key situations. The Nationals have also done a good job manufacturing runs through base stealing and situational hitting, making them a pesky team to face.
