The Washington Nationals (68-84 SU, 83-69 ATS) open up a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs that’s really kind of irrelevant for both teams. The Cubs have done a good job of pulling themselves up to above .500 and have a shot to finish in second place in the NL Central, but Milwaukee has already clinched the division and Chicago would need an epic collapse to have any hope at the playoffs.
Washington, as it’s been for the entire season, is just kind of there. The Nationals have been caught in a sea of their own, nowhere near Atlanta and New York for the playoff race and nowhere near Miami for last place. They also aren’t anywhere near the .500 mark, so they’re really just playing out the final stretch of the season. Whether that matters to them decides if there’s any value on them.

Javier Assad just faced this Washington lineup three starts ago and was merely good, not great. Assad allowed eight hits and three earned runs, as the Cubs came away with a 5-3 win. The Cubs have lost four of Assad’s past six starts, so things haven’t exactly been ideal when he’s taken the mound. He sports a 3.27 ERA for the year, but he seems to be struggling down the stretch.
Patrick Corbin remains all over the place with his pitching. He seemed to have gotten things under control by pulling off four wins in his past five starts, but the exception was a 7-3 loss at Pittsburgh where the Pirates blasted him for seven runs in six innings of work. Corbin does have the ability to throw well at times, but he’s incredibly unpredictable at this point in his career. With this matchup, our prediction for Washington vs. Chicago is Over 8.5 Runs.
