Villarreal of the Spanish league and Ajax of the Netherlands are both mired at the bottom of the Champions League group table. While Villarreal's chances of reaching the playoffs are virtually nonexistent, Ajax can still dream of doing so. However, they will need a victory on Tuesday at La Cerámica.
Ajax suffered a heavy defeat in the Dutch Cup at the hands of AZ Alkmaar, conceding six goals, and in matchday 19 of the Eredivisie, they were unable to secure a win against G.A. Eagles, despite being the favorites in the betting. In the Champions League, Ajax conceded 18 goals, more than any other team.
These statistics might suggest that Marcelino's team is in a favorable position to win in the Champions League, but Villarreal has noticeably lost its attacking edge. Villarreal slipped out of contention for the top spot in La Liga, behind Real Madrid and Barcelona, after losing 0-2 at La Cartuja to Real Betis last weekend. Santi Comesaña was sent off in another goalless draw for the Yellow Submarine, who have only managed to score in two of their six Champions League matches.
