A +125 moneyline underdog, Magda Linette will go for her second win this year against Veronika Kudermetova in the fourth round of the 2025 Cincinnati Open on Thursday.
Linette punched her ticket into the fourth round with a massive upset over world’s No.4 and 2024 Cincinnati Open finalist Jessica Pegula, 7-6(5) 3-6 6-3. The Pole earned her sixth win against a top-5 opponent by winning 74 percent of her first serves and seizing five breakpoints, the last of which came in the 8th game of the final set, giving her a commanding 5-3 lead and the serve. With the victory, Linnette reached the round of 16 of a WTA 1000 event for the third time this year after also reaching the stage in Abu Dhabi and Miami.
Kudermetova toppled No.16 seed Clara Tauson 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4 to reach the fourth round. Kudermetova and Tauson almost had identical numbers on the first-serve win conversion (77% to 74%) and breakpoints (2 – 2). However, the only difference is that the Russian scored the majority of her points in the second and third sets, allowing her to fashion out a comeback win.
