The No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores women’s basketball team will try to remain undefeated when they face off against the No. 8 Michigan Wolverines in the Coretta Scott King Classic today. Tipoff at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EST. with coverage provided by Fox.

Vanderbilt has been blowing through the competition so far this year. They dominated most of their nonconference schedule, winning by double digits in all but two games (the other two were won by nine. Conference play has been a little more challenging. They were down 28-22 at the half to then-No. 5 LSU but roared back in the second half,  outscoring the Tigers by five in each quarter to win by four, 65-61. In their last game vs. Mississippi State, they took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter but held on to win by five. As for Michigan, this game will be the fourth vs. a ranked opponent for the Wolverines. They beat No. 18 Notre Dame (93-54), lost to No. 1 UConn (72-69), and beat No. 25 Illinois in their last game on Thursday, January 15 (85-69). Their second loss came against Washington on New Year’s Day (64-52).

Our Michigan Wolverines vs Vanderbilt Commodores Prediction

Statistically, this game looks like a toss-up. Both are fast-paced, high-scoring teams that also happen to play solid defense. I’m guessing Michigan is favored because they have played a slightly tougher schedule and did play well against No. 1 UConn. Vandy hasn’t really been tested, so it is hard to say just how good they are. This game looks to tight to call, but I think we’ll learn a lot about both and the final score will be relatively low.
