After losing their final group game, the Stars and Stripes will look to get themselves back on track against the Bosnians on Wednesday evening. Can they reach the Round-of-16? We’ll find out in California.
Having won their first two games, the US had the luxury of not needing anything from their final game against Turkey, which was just as well, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men coming unstuck against their already-eliminated opponents, losing by three goals to two. Hopefully that result has dented their confidence too much. The Bosnians should now be at their most confident since arriving stateside, following their 3-1 win against Qatar, a result that sent them into the knockout with their tails up.
For the most part, Pochettino’s men have been good at forcing the issue at this World Cup, but they may struggle to do that a little more than the early odds suggest against a defiant Bosnian team that can frustrate opponents, so much so that ‘Bosnia +1 Asian Handicap’, which pays out as a win for a tie or a Bosnian win and a refund if the Bosnians lose by exactly one goal, appeals greatly at odds of +145.

The forward line will be spearheaded by the hugely experienced Edin Dzeko, while young winger Kerim Alajbegovic is expected to once again feature as a key player. Sure, the Stars and Stripes have plenty of offensive quality, and they will be confident of doing some damage having scored eight group-stage goals. However, you could easily argue that the Bosnians are better set up to frustrate than any of USA’s previous opponents at this tournament.
On their way to entering this tournament, we saw the Bosnians grind it out against the Italians, while they certainly frustrated the Canadians in the groups, tying 1-1. Sergej Barbarez’s men are well organized, strong physically, adept at defending set plays/crosses, while they pack a punch on the break. All in all, they look too generously priced in the early betting.
