UEFA World Cup qualification Group D kicks off on Friday night, with a blockbuster matchup between Ukraine and France in Wroclaw. France are strong favorites to pick up all three points, but Didier Deschamps' side have had a mixed bag of results in recent months. They reached the semi finals of the Nations League in June, before losing 5-4 to Spain in an incredible contest that saw the French come from 5-1 down, only to fall agonizingly short of forcing the game into extra time. To France's credit, they bounced back to defeat Germany in the 3rd place playoff three days later, but overall, there is a feeling that this is not a vintage French squad and they are slightly behind some of the top teams in the continent.
Ukraine's results have also been up and down over the last 12 months. Victories against the likes of Albania and New Zealand have been interspersed with disappointing defeats to Canada and Belgium. But whilst Ukraine are outsiders to top Group D, they will fancy their chances of beating Iceland and Azerbaijan in the race to secure a qualification play-off spot.
